  1. My daughter gave me ‘Persiana’ by Sabrina Ghayour last year. Thus started what I believe will be a rest of my life long love affair with the food and I began to look more closely at the culture both ancient and modern, conscious as I was that my pathetic awareness was based around some sort of confused amalgam of the 1001 nights and the Ayatollah. I will read this book. Your review is delicate and touching in the extreme … the damage. The damage carried. The memories. The evocations. I look forward to reading it and I thank you for being my guide 🙂

    I grew up in Iran and left a few months before my O’levels, when my school closed during the revolution. I was very happy there, and remember it extremely fondly. The people, climate, language, culture and, not least, the food! I try to reproduce the rice and stews at home and like to eat in Persian restaurants (London is full of them now). Delicious!

    By the way, if you are interested in a book about growing up in Iran as an expat in an interesting family, Ashley Dartnell (full disclosure: she is a friend, though met many years after we had both left Iran) has written ‘Farangi Girl’. (‘Farangi’ means foreign.)
